A Teacher's Story
by Claire Dunkley

It all started when I decided to buy myself a proper CD...it felt more fulfilling than downloading from the Internet. At the time the UK charts were full of rubbish...until I stumbled across the Gypsy Queens! I was enchanted by how different their music appeared amongst the other stuff on offer...and after listening to it in my car I was hooked!

I spotted their version of "Country Roads" and took the CD into the school where I teach to let the kids listen to it. You see...we were listening to John Denver's version of "Country Roads" in our school assemblies since our big question was 'Where is home?'  The kids much preferred the GQ's version and we played it incessantly!

It then dawned on me how groovy it would be if the kids got into groups and wrote letters to each band member asking questions about why their homes are special to them, since they all originate from different countries. We even told them about why our home is special to us!

Eventually...a whopping package was sent to Didi containing photos...letters...posters...recordings of the kids singing to "Country Roads" and "l'Americano" ...plus other bits and bobs.

He was so stunned by the kids' completely innocent appreciation of their music that he rang me and asked if they could visit the kids to show how their hard work had paid off...you can imagine I wasn't about to say no!

The kids' faces were pictures I will treasure forever

... it was an incredible experience and they are all genuinely amazing guys!

... they were so appreciative of the kids and there was a whole lot of mutual thanks going on!

Have you seen the video...the kids were ecstatic!
I love those guys...

I wrote to them the next day ::
~
Thank you so so much for yesterday...you were incredible! We were all still buzzing today! You have no idea how much your visit means. It was lovely to meet you. Thought you might like this from two of the kids...x
~
Manuel wrote back ::  "Hey!!! The pleasure was absolutely ours! You've no idea how excited and happy we were after visiting your school.... What a lovely bunch of kids... Thank you so much and God bless"
